Nov 10 - Going out in style: Nebulae at the end of a sun-like star’s life


Our speaker this week was Rudy Montez, an astrophysicist at the Chandra X-ray Center of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, MA. Rudy studies "planetary nebulae," the ghostly shells sloughed off by dying stars.

Rudy began by showing a gallery of beautiful Hubble Space Telescope photographs of planetary nebulae, explaining how the various colors tell us about the composition of the layers of each nebula. He noted that astronomers always expected planetary nebulae to be spherical, because they're believed to form as the outermost layers of a giant star expand away in all directions from the hot core.

But that's not what we see! Real-life nebulae display amazing, complex structure, including dumbbell-shaped bi-polar lobes. Rudy explained that the leading hypothesis to explain the formation of these lobes is that a donut-shaped ring of dust surrounding the dying star blocks the star's outer layers from expanding in certain directions, forcing them out at the opposite openings of the donut hole. The origins of this ring of dust are not quite clear, but they may be leftover debris from a pair of binary stars orbiting each other at the center of what will eventually be the nebula.

Rudy then discussed his area of particular expertise: X-ray observations of planetary nebulae from the Chandra space telescope, which give us a window onto the hottest, densest central regions. He showed beautiful composite images of Chandra, Hubble, and Spitzer data, which illuminate, respectively, the innermost, middle, and outermost regions of planetary nebulae. Three windows onto these extraordinary objects.

Oct 30 - Re-tuning the Hubble Diagram


Our lecture this past Friday was by Columbia Astronomy graduate student David Hendel entitled "Re-tuning the Hubble Diagram".  David used stunning Hubble images to demonstrate the diversity in galaxy shapes and discuss how astronomers classify them. He then went on to discuss why this organization, the Hubble Tuning Fork, can be misleading and how galaxies can be transformed from one classification to another.

After the lecture, some stayed for a lecture on our Local Group by Lauren Corlies and Mihir Kulkarni and Richard Nederlander ran the 3D wall and a discussion on stellar structure. Up on the roof, the weather was great for observing. Yong Zheng led volunteers Emily Sandford, Alex Teachey, Aleksey Generozov and Zephyr Penoyre in pointing the telescopes at double star Albireo, the Double Cluster, and the elusive Andromeda Galaxy.


Overall, it was a great way to kick off the Halloween weekend.

Sept 18: Hubble IMAX


The Hubble Space Telescope has been humanity's eye on the universe for over 25 years now. In honor of the observatory's birthday this year, last Friday we screened the IMAX film "Hubble" at Columbia. We were moved to a smaller room this year, but one of our biggest crowds ever came out to celebrate Hubble with us.

Hubble was launched in 1990, but was partly disabled until a 1993 servicing mission installed a contact lens (of sorts) that allowed Hubble to reach its full potential. Though the movie included clips from the launch and first servicing mission, it focused on the final shuttle mission to Hubble in 2009 (there were four servicing missions with five shuttle visits in total, not including launch). We watched as the astronauts, including now Columbia Engineering Professor Mike Massimino, persevered through technical and mechanical challenges to replace important instruments and stabilizing gyroscopes. These repairs enabled Hubble to continue its crucial role of observing our universe.

Another highlight of the film was the animated fly through of the iconic Hubble image of the Orion Nebula. The Hubble data on Orion is so detailed that scientists at the Space Telescope Science Institute and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications were able to reconstruct the Nebula in 3D. Although we couldn't show the 3D version, flying through the brightly colored nebula and zooming in to see the gaseous disks around infant stars took everyone's breath away.



After the movie, we showed a simulated clip of the Andromeda Galaxy colliding with our own (based on Hubble data), along with a cool solar system model built in the Black Rock Desert. On the roof, graduate student Steven Mohammed and four other volunteers who showed off the Andromeda Galaxy and the Ring Nebula. And when one of our 3D projectors on the 13th floor crashed, undergraduate Briley Lewis and grad student Zephyr Peyore thought fast and created a new presentation to educate visitors.

April 5: Eyes in the Sky


On a beautifully clear (almost) spring night, PhD student Ximena Fernandez gave a talk entitled "Eyes in the Sky" to a packed room of over 200 people. Ximena's talk focused on how the combination of space telescopes that operate at a variety of wavelengths have been invaluable in revealing the secrets of our Universe. Starting with our galactic center, she showed how only through the use of infrared and X-ray data have we begun to understand the nature of our galaxy's supermassive black hole. Moving to nearby galaxies, GALEX images revealed the largest known spiral galaxy, which has extended spiral arms thanks to an ongoing interaction with another galaxy. At the end, Ximena presented the newly released Hubble Extreme Deep Field, the single longest exposure in all of astronomy. The image contains over 5 billion galaxies, including the oldest known galaxy to date. The talk ended with a video that zoomed through the image to show the distribution of the galaxies in the picture. You can watch the video here!

After seeing so many wonderful images, the good weather gave everyone the opportunity to see amazing objects with their own eyes.  Most popular were the Orion Nebula and Jupiter.  Some chose to remain in the lecture hall where there was a presentation on the Cosmic Microwave Background and the new results just released by the Planck Telescope.  Finally, there was also the possibility of experiencing our 3D wall. Everyone had a great time and we're looking forward to our next event.

March 15: Cosmic Candles


Last week, Ashley Pagnotta, a post-doc at the American Museum of Natural History, gave a talk entitled, "Supernovae: Cosmic Candles of the Universe." Ashely's research focuses on stellar explosions known as supernovae which occur toward the end of a star's life. Different phenomena give rise to different types of supernovae and by understanding the nature of these explosions, astronomers can better constrain the parameters that help us describe the behavior of our Universe. 

It was less than a hundred years ago that astronomers even discovered that the Universe wasn't static, i.e., "standing still". Using the doppler effect to measure the speed at which galaxies were moving away from Earth and cepheid variable stars to measure distance, Edwin Hubble made a plot of of these two variables and discovered that the farther a galaxy was from Earth, the faster it was moving a way from us. Today, we call this plot the Hubble Diagram in his honor and continue to update it as we make better and better measurements. You can make you own Hubble Diagram using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey here

While Hubble's work showed that Universe is expanding, it said nothing about the future of this expansion. To investigate this, two teams of astronomers proposed using Type 1a supernovae to probe the Universe out to greater distances, and therefore farther back in time. They used Type 1a supernovae instead of cepheid variables as these supernovae have a characteristic explosion that allows astronomers to use them as a standard candle of sorts; astronomers know how bright they are at a given distance so they can observe them at various distances and extrapolate their true distance based on their observed brightness. Both teams ended up discovering that the expansion of the Universe was *accelerating*, giving rise to the theory of dark energy, and as a result we awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2011

Ashely went on to explain how studying how Type 1a supernovae form in more detail can help astronomers minimize errors associated with their distance measurements and thereby improve our understanding of dark energy. You can view the slides from Ashely's talk here

Unfortunately, the skies were cloudy again so after the lecture, the 120+ audience members toured the roof with the help of graduate student Adrian Price-Whelan, viewed 3D movies with undergraduate Jose Montelongo, and learned about Comet PANSTARRS with Director of Outreach, Summer Ash, and graduate student Yong Zheng.

February 1: Saving Hubble

On Friday, February 1st, we kicked off our spring Public Lecture & Stargazing series with not a lecture, but a film. Saving Hubble is a documentary that chronicles NASA's decision to cancel the Hubble Space Telescope in 2004 and the subsequent public outcry. Filmmaker David Gaynes interviewed people far and wide on their thoughts about the pioneering space telescope that became a household name, from scientists and engineers who worked on Hubble to amateur astronomers, cabdrivers, and kids who are self-proclaimed "Hubble Huggers." After the screening, Summer Ash led Q&A with David and Ph.D. candidate, Christine Simpson.

The event attracted a sizable audiences of over 200 people who got to see some great sights from the rooftop telescopes after the film, thanks to the clouds that decided to clear out. Graduate students Jeff Andrews, Lauren Corlies, Ximena Fernandez, and David Hendel had telescopes trained on Jupiter and the Orion Nebula, both wonderful offerings of the winter sky. We also had the 3D wall up and running.

April 27: How is a Hubble Image Made?

The beautiful pictures of our universe provided by the Hubble Space Telescope are some of the most inspiring in Astronomy. This past Friday, PhD student Christine Simpson explained to attendees how these images are made. Explaining the basics of the telescope, CCDs and the color-assignment process, everyone could walk away with a deeper appreciation of these images.

In response to requests from several audience members, Christine has provided the following links related to her talk: Hubble’s Hidden Treasures contest and contest submissions to date; a nice explanation of the meaning of color in Hubble images; and an article from Sky & Telescope that describes Hubble image processing.

After the talk, some stayed to hear about Hubble's successor, the James Webb Space Telescope. The cold weather also provided clear skies for observations on our roof. Columbia students helped visitors observe Saturn, the Moon, and the Mizar-Alcor star system in the Big Dipper's handle. Visitors were also able to experience our 3D wall. Our next lecture of the semester is May 11th. We hope to see you there!
